Planning Your First Trip to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj

Dharamshala sits on the slopes of the Kangra valley below the snow-capped Dhauladhar range. Lower Dharamshala is the busy town; above it lies McLeod Ganj, the centre of Tibetan life in India and home to the Dalai Lama.

Getting here

The nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra) airport, about 13 km from Dharamshala. The nearest broad-gauge railhead is Pathankot. Overnight Volvo buses run from Delhi and Chandigarh, and the drive from Chandigarh takes roughly 6 to 7 hours.

When to go

March to June is pleasant for sightseeing and trekking. July to September brings heavy monsoon rain and lush green hills. October and November offer crisp, clear views, and December to February is cold, with snow on the peaks and sometimes in McLeod Ganj.

What to see

  • The Tsuglagkhang complex and the market lanes of McLeod Ganj
  • Bhagsunag temple and waterfall
  • Sunset at Naddi
  • The Norbulingka Institute
  • The Triund ridge, if you are up for a full-day hike
